Q&A: How do you add a computer to your home wireless router?|home router

I just got another computer in a different room in my house, but the old computer that is connected to the router is windows 2000, the new one is windows xp. How do i add the windows xp to the wireless internet router?

Answer by Kimbo455
Seeing as there two different brands; You may need to buy a new router but not completely sure.

You should be able to have it search for wireless networks, have it find the router, and then put in whatever password there is for the router, if there is one, and then it should connect.

first off there diff. operating systems but it doesn’t matter. if the new one is wireless then you need to open your wireless internet .if it’s a laptop it may have an actual switch to use to turn on the wireless or you need to go into your connection settings . if it’s not wireless then you get a wireless card (Internal)l,usb dongle or a pcmcia card for older laptops that don’t have an Internal wireless slot. good luck

You should just be able to connect to the wireless router. It doesnt matter what computer you have, as long as it has the wireless capabilities. I have Windows XP and windows VIsta running off the same router. I have even had friends come over and connect with macs.

Two computers out of the 4 in our house said that the computer is conflicting with another IP address on the network. What does that mean should we get a password protected network so that other people outside of the house cant use ours, or does that even matter in this case?

set all your computers to automatically obtain configuration from the router (instead of typing in an address like 192.168.10.2).

(start menu, control panel, “network connections”, right-click, “properties”, select “internet protocol TCP/IP from the list, click “properties” and select the “obtain an ip address automatically” option).

if you must insist on assigning IP addresses to your computers, then chances are the one computer that is complaining has an IP address the same as another computer. change it to something else.

Assign different static IPs under the TCP properties page.

Answer by arrowroberts
It sounds more like one or more computers has a static IP address.
Go to control panel/network connects. Select your network card,, right click and go to properties. Select TCP/IP and click properties. Click the radio button that says “Obtain an IP address autmtically” do the same for the DNS server address.

For the other part,If you are using a wireless router, it is always best to password protect it.

It depends on the router model and settings. The router usually is the one assigning the IP address and the limit for class C (what you most probably have) segment is 255.

Routers usually give out unique IP addresses. My guess is one of the computers in the house was manually configured with an IP address that the router gave out to another computer/device on your network
